Cricket at the Rosebowl is played under modified rules. The most important modifications are:
1. Due to the smaller ground, teams shall be 3-a-side, 4-a-side, 5-a-side or 6-a-side as agreed by the two captains prior to the commencement of play.
2. An "automatic wicketkeeper" board is constructed at the strikers end behind the batsman and stumps. This acts to stop the ball from flying off should the batsman leave the ball. Also if there is a 'snick' off the bat which carries through to hit the board on the offside or narrowly on the legside above a certain height, the batsman is dismissed "caught behind".
3. There is only one end the batsman play at - the end with the auto-wickie board behind it.
4. Every player in a bowling team must bowl one over before anyone can bowl their second over, and every player must bowl two overs before anyone can bowl their third over etc...
5. At the end of each over, batsmen swap ends. So if you finished the over at the strikers end, you'd be off-strike for the start of the next over.
6. The boundary is marked by the bottom of the ditch in the fine-leg/3rd man area. In all other areas, the sheep-fence marks it.
7. If in the umpires' opinion, a tree or other obstacle got in the way of the ball going for a boundary, the boundary shall be awarded.
8. If all batsmen are dismissed except for one, that remaining batsman bats by himself by facing every ball until he is dismissed. In this situation, he can be run-out at either end (electric ends).
9. In tight run-out decisions, the benefit of the doubt shall go to the fielding team if the throw is a direct hit. If not, the batsman shall get the benefit of the doubt.
10. LBW's will only be given if absolutely plumb.
11. The ball is a softer "incredi-ball" made of foam and rubber with a seam. This makes pads and helmets unnecessary.
12. Unlimited overs are allowed - test match style. The number of innings is generally two per side, but can be changed during the game if the two captains agree.
13. If a side batting second is 100 runs or more behind on the first innings, the team which batted first may elect to enforce the follow-on.
14. If a wide is bowled, no additional runs can be scored by the batsman other than the 1 run for the wide itself.
15. No overthrows can be scored from a run-out attempt.
16. Sledging, abuse of the umpires and bouncers are unrestricted and encouraged.
