Two cricketing prizes have historically been contested on the Rosebowl: The Haywards Shield and The Ashes.

The Haywards Shield
At the end of secondary school, members of the class of 2003 decided to setup a game of cricket, so as to meet up annually and keep in touch.

At our school, almost everyone lived in either Porirua or the Hutt Valley - many a dull school lesson was enlivened through the endless argument over which is the superior place to live. This natural rivalry lent itself perfectly to cricket.

The "Haywards Shield" was thus named - as the part of State Highway 58 that connects Porirua and the Hutt Valley is known as the Haywards Hill. It features a picture of Chris Cairns in the middle, as a constant reminder to all players to always strive for excellence and to always give their all - just like the strapping Kiwi all-rounder.

This trophy was contested from the summer of 2003/04 through to the summer of 2012/13. The Shield was then retired, and replaced by The Ashes.

The Ashes
On the 16th of February 2013, the deciding match in the 10th anniversary summer of the Haywards Shield was played, and won by the Hutt Valley. However, that team was "Hutt Valley" in name only - as Luke Williams was the sole representative playing who had any ties to that floodplain.

In fond remembrance of  the spirit of Haywards Shield cricket, the Ashes were born. Containing the burned remains of a cricket bat and willow from the tree overlooking the Rosebowl, the urn is now contested between the HIBS Old Boys, and an Invitational Team assembled each summer.

The Ashes are played under the same rules as the Haywards Shield were, and as such statistics for both competitions are combined.
